Mesquite Star Desk

This is a desk we made for the Texas Mesquite Art Festival in Fredericksburg Texas. We work on a special project every year for this show and we had been saving a very special log which the beetle larvae had been carving on for some time. After killing the larvae we flattened the sides of the log and starting pouring epoxy in the holes so that we could mill it into lumber for the drawer fronts. We cut it very thin and bookmatched it in 2 directions to make some really awesome drawerfronts. The thinly sliced mesquite was glued to thicker pieces of mesquite that would be used to make the drawer box. The left side of the desk is for lateral files, the right side is 1 deep drawer and 2 shallower drawers with extra work space on pull out shelves and a pencil drawer in the middle. All the sides have floating panels and some of the panels are also bookmatched. The feet were turned on the lathe. The inlay on the desk top is made with walnut and holly. We have been doing inlayed stars for years, but we just added the holly this year to make it look more 3 dimensional.
